Do I need to give you access to my bank account?

Accepted Answer

No. We never need your bank credentials. All we need is your monthly earnings report (from Wolt, Uber Eats, or your own invoicing) and receipts for any business expenses. That's it.

What is the suomi.fi authorisation and is it safe?

Accepted Answer

Suomi.fi is the official Finnish government portal. The authorisation lets us file your VAT return and handle your tax matters in OmaVero on your behalf — legally and securely. It gives us access to your tax records in OmaVero only — not your bank, Kela, or any other accounts. You can revoke it at any time.

How much VAT do I actually owe as a platform worker?

Delivery and courier services are taxed at the standard VAT rate of 25.5%. Take Wolt as an example: Wolt creates self-billing invoices on your behalf that include this VAT. You receive the full VAT-inclusive payment, then declare the VAT to Vero and pay the net amount — which is output VAT (25.5% on your earnings) minus input VAT you can deduct on business expenses like fuel, phone, equipment, and vehicle costs. Many gig workers with significant deductible expenses end up owing less than the full 25.5% after deductions.

How often do I need to file VAT?

Most delivery platforms (Wolt included) require partners operating through their own company to be fully VAT-registered from day one — it is a condition of the partnership. How often you file depends on your annual turnover: under €30,000 you file once a year (deadline: last day of February for the previous year), between €30,000 and €100,000 you file quarterly, and above €100,000 you file monthly. Most of our gig-worker clients fall under €30,000 and file annually. We check your turnover when you sign up and handle the correct frequency.

What do I need to send you each month?

Just two things via WhatsApp: your monthly earnings summary (from Wolt, Uber Eats, or your own invoicing) and photos of any business expense receipts. Please make sure receipt photos are clear and the amounts are fully readable — blurry or compressed images cannot be used as valid records. We handle everything from there. If you are an annual VAT filer, we will let you know exactly when we need your documents — you do not need to send anything every month.

Do I need YEL pension insurance as a gig worker?

Accepted Answer

Yes, if the estimated value of your work input exceeds €9,208 per year (2025 threshold). YEL is mandatory pension insurance for the self-employed in Finland — it is based on the monetary value of your work, not simply your platform turnover. You must take it out within six months of starting your business activity. As a new entrepreneur you get a 22% discount on your YEL contributions for the first four years. YEL also determines the amount of your Kela sickness allowance and parental leave, so getting the income level right from the start matters.

What expenses can I deduct as a platform worker?

Any genuine business expense can be deducted. For couriers this typically includes fuel or electricity for your vehicle, vehicle maintenance and repairs proportional to business use, your phone plan, a courier bag or thermal bag, a bike or scooter (smaller purchases can often be deducted in full in the year of purchase; larger or longer-lasting equipment is depreciated over time), and bookkeeping fees. If you use your vehicle for both work and personal trips you need a mileage log — alternatively you can claim the standard mileage deduction of €0.55 per kilometre (2026 rate). Keep every receipt.

Can I deduct the cost of buying a phone?

Accepted Answer

Yes, in proportion to business use. If the VAT-exclusive purchase price is €1,200 or less, it counts as a small acquisition (pienhankinta) and can be deducted in full in the year of purchase — provided the phone is mainly used for business. If business use is under 50%, only half the purchase price is deductible. If you're VAT-registered, the VAT on the purchase is reclaimable in the same proportion as the business-use share.

Can I deduct my phone subscription?

Accepted Answer

Yes, based on your actual business-use share. If, for example, half of your calls and data usage are work-related, you can deduct roughly half of the monthly subscription cost — and the VAT on that portion, if you're VAT-registered. Keep the invoices; we'll work out a fair split with you.

Can I deduct bookkeeping fees, including the VAT on them?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Bookkeeping and accounting fees are a normal, fully deductible business expense — they support your business activity in full, with no private-use split to work out. If you're VAT-registered, the 25.5% VAT included on the invoice is fully reclaimable on your VAT return.

Can I deduct the VAT on my car if I use it for deliveries?

Almost never, and this trips a lot of couriers up. Vero's rule for passenger cars is strict: even minimal private use — including ordinary commuting — removes the entire VAT deduction right on the car's purchase and running costs. The only exceptions are cars used for taxi work, driving instruction, or resale/rental. So if you drive your own car for both deliveries and personal errands, you cannot reclaim VAT on the car itself, fuel, or repairs. What you can do is deduct the business-use share of running costs on your income tax return, either based on a mileage log of actual costs or the standard mileage deduction of €0.55/km (2026 rate) — but that's an income tax deduction, not a VAT one.

Does the platform pay me including VAT, or do I need to invoice them separately?

Accepted Answer

Most delivery platforms use a self-billing arrangement — Wolt, for example, pays you the VAT-inclusive amount twice per month and generates the invoice on your behalf. You do not need to send them an invoice yourself; they email you a proof of payment after each pay period. The VAT included in that payment is not yours to keep — you must declare it to Vero on your VAT return and pay the net amount due.

What happens if I miss a VAT filing deadline?

Vero charges a late-filing penalty of €3 per day, up to a maximum of €135. On top of that, any VAT paid late accrues interest at 9.5% per year (2026 rate). The amounts are relatively small for a short delay, but they add up and go on your record. If you realise you have missed a deadline, file and pay as soon as possible. We monitor your deadlines and send you reminders so this does not happen.

Question 15

I also work for other platforms — does that change anything?

It can. If you work for multiple platforms your combined turnover determines your VAT filing frequency — you cannot split it across separate registrations. All your courier income from all platforms is reported together on the same VAT return and the same annual tax return. We consolidate all your platform earnings when we prepare your filings, so nothing gets missed.

Question 16

Do I need to keep a mileage log?

Accepted Answer

Yes, if you want to claim vehicle costs based on actual use or the standard mileage deduction. Finnish tax law requires a driving log that records the date, start and end point, purpose of the journey, and kilometres driven for each business trip. Without it, Vero can disallow the deduction entirely. You must keep these records for six years in case of an audit. We provide a simple template you can fill in on your phone as you work.
